It was designed to transport 12 people or 1.1 tonnes of cargo.

A key advantage of the model was its reduced overall height, achieved through a canvas cab roof, a fold-down windshield, and removable upper door sections with windows. This allowed the GAZ-62 to fit inside a Mi-4 helicopter and be deployed via parachute.
